Filing an Extension?

It’s April 15, and if you’re panicking—or just filed an extension—you’re not alone. Every year, millions of people put off filing because their books are a mess or their receipts are in a shoebox. If that sounds like you, take a deep breath. Here are the most common reasons why businesses have come to me for help at tax time:
Business and Personal Expenses Are Mixed
Using the same account for both personal and business spending creates a mess come tax time. Separate accounts help keep the lines clear. Personal expenses should be booked to owner’s draw, while legitimate business costs get categorized into the appropriate expense accounts.
Too Busy Running a Business to Bookkeep
It’s easy to lose track of the books when you’re focused on running the actual business. Catching up months of transactions can feel intimidating, but it’s worth it. Reconcile your accounts, categorize everything accurately, and restore order to your financial records so you’re not scrambling later.
Receipts! *%# Receipts!
Losing receipts, or never collecting them in the first place, makes it harder to support deductions and track true costs. Choose one system for receipt management (a folder, app, or email inbox rule) and stick with it. That small habit saves hours later and avoids paying a CPA to chase paper trails.
The Whole Thing Feels Overwhelming
Not sure where to start? Start small. Pull your most recent bank statement. Create a folder for receipts. Open your bookkeeping software and review your income for the year. Progress happens step by step—and you don’t have to do it all in one sitting. Call me!
I Don’t File Taxes, But I’ll Help You Be Ready
If this list makes you want to close your laptop and go lie in the grass, good news: you don’t have to do it alone. While I don’t prepare or file business income tax returns, I do catch up and clean up books and prepare detailed, accurate financial reports that make it easier (and cheaper) for your CPA or enrolled agent to do their job. Whether you’ve filed an extension or haven’t touched your books in months, I’m here to help you get caught up and move forward. You’ll feel better, your tax preparer will thank you, and you’ll be in a much better position to make decisions for your business.
